Ways to Eat Chia Seeds for Healthy Diabetes Management

By Merab Inyika September 01, 2019

Chia seeds.. Chia Seeds… Chia Seeds…. Am sure you have heard of them or at least know someone who is crazy about them. So what are Chia Seeds and why are they important for diabetics? Chia seeds are a rich source of fiber that is beneficial for your digestion. The gel-like fiber in the soaked seeds promotes bowel movement. Chia seeds contain high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids, and that can do wonders for your heart health and brain. These tiny seeds are also gluten-free in nature, rich in bone-building calcium and phosphorous among other things.

If you are a diabetic, your doctors may have probably advised you to watch your sugary and processed food intake. If you are diabetics you should also consider fruits and veggies in your diet, because they are rich in fibre. Fiber does not get digested and metabolized easily, enabling a slow release of sugar in your bloodstream. Chia is said to be a wonderful addition to a diabetes diet. Here's more:

 Chia Seeds For Diabetes

• Chia seeds are a good source of dietary fibre that helps prevent blood sugar spike.

• They are low in digestible carbs and are also anti-inflammatory in nature

• Diabetics often complain about weight fluctuations. Chia seeds also help in weight management. Since fibre fills you up, you do not feel like bingeing too often. Eating in moderation helps weight loss.

Here are a few Chia recipes Diabetics:

1. Salads

Make your salads rich in greens, fruits, nuts, and seeds. A fibre-rich salad helps keep your blood sugar levels stable.

2. Yogurt

Add Chia Seeds to your yogurt to give it a nutty and crunchy flavor. Top your yogurt with some delectable fruits and you are good to go. Yogurt is a good source of protein, which makes it ideal for diabetics too.

3. Oatmeal

Oatmeal is one of the best breakfasts for diabetics. In addition to fibre, oats are rich in protein. Eating plain oatmeal every day can be boring. Spruce up your breakfast bowl with fruits and Chia Seeds.

4. Homemade crackers

Homemade crackers are a great snack for diabetics. Use whole grain or multigrain flour. Refined grain products will spike your blood sugar levels as they metabolize faster. Add some Chia seeds to the batter while baking your crackers.
